For those traveling or showing in Colorado be aware of the following -
Canine Influenza Virus Confirmed in Colorado
Several Denver-area veterinary practices and shelters have reported high
numbers of especially tenacious upper respiratory infection (URI) cases to
the CVMA offices. While not every URI case is necessarily canine influenza
virus (CIV), serological testing confirms that CIV has arrived in Colorado.
CVMA has compiled a list of resources on CIV, available at its Web site
, for
use by veterinarians, shelter personnel, and dog owners. The resources
include a backgrounder on CIV from AVMA, an FAQ
produced by AVMA regarding CIV, and links to several veterinary laboratories
with information on submitting samples. CVMA's page of CIV resources will be
updated as more information on the disease in Colorado becomes available.
Because of the high morbidity (estimated at 80 percent) and mortality
(estimated in confirmed cases from 5 to 8 percent) of CIV cases,
veterinarians, shelter personnel, and others who care for dogs are
recommended to ensure adequate prevention and control methods are used.
Those methods are detailed in the AVMA backgrounder. At present, there is no
vaccine available for CIV.
As a newly emerging pathogen, all dogs - regardless of age or breed - are
suscept! ible to CIV, which is easily transmitted and highly contagious.
While canine influenza virus is not a reportable disease, the Colorado State
Veterinarian's office is receiving calls from practitioners on an
informational basis.
