You cannot split classes unless the breed standard already divides the dogs
in some way...usually colour or weight. Our standard does not, therefore,
classes can't be divided at shows.
We would have to define black and tan and sable as well as
white...take a look at the Labrador Retriever standard, the Collie and
Sheltie standards, or the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel standard, where
colours are specifically defined. Then take a look at most show
classes...only the Open classes are divided if they are divided at all, and
most shows don't divide them. Specialties do...and shows known to pull very
large entries. The average show doesn't...it doesn't pay.
Cockers are divided into varieties...also by colour...Dachshunds by
coat......both those breeds send more than one breed representative to the
group. At FCI shows, the Dachshunds have a group of their own, divided by
size (weight) and coat both. The new breed, Pyrenean Shepherds, has two
coats but only one dog goes to the group (I think).
The AKC is not likely to allow our standard to change now. to divide the
breed by colour......especially any changes that are now going to allow
things that used to be DQs (white) or faults (coats). If WGSDs are
allowed in, they will probably come in as a new breed...either that or the
AKC will take the DQ out of our standard and make it just a fault...we'd
need some kind of advocate to get them to do that...and I doubt the WGSDs
will "go for it." . We can talk and talk and talk and in the end we as a
group will really have nothing to say. If the WGSD club gets that far, it
may be that the GSDCA is asked to send some representative(s) to take part
in a discussion, or, more likely, the AKC will just ask our Delegate for an
opinion. I wouldn't look for any special consideration.
