Weren't Westies once Cairn Terriers?
The Norwich breed was split. Lots of breeds came from mixtures of older breeds
or by taking a "flaw" in a breed and create a new breed.

Subject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] Re: Breeds

Most breeds that exist today were developed for a purpose...be that as a
water retriever, all-purpose hunting companion, guardian (of home and/or
flock), herding assistant, perimeter keeper, all around farm dog, vermin
killer (sometimes with specific vermin in mind), or just as little
companions to attract the fleas away from the humans, or to keep us
warm...acting as living hot water bottles. Some may have been the result of
an accident, or a "sport," but when that happened, people tried to get them
to breed so that they'd be recognizable as what they were supposed to be...a
new breed.
Most of the designer breeds of today were bred just for the hell of
it...with the possible exception of some of the "doodles," which were
supposed to be non-shedding. They aren't...not even in the majority. Also,
they don't resemble one another very much within those so called "breeds,"
and heaven knows, Labradoodles have been around a long enough time to have
more similarity than they do.
Years ago I knew someone who was trying to make a new breed out of
crossing Irish Setters with Golden Retrievers....she went out of my radar
and to this day I have never heard that idea from anyone else.
F1 generations may be dissimilar...but after 20 years or so, some
progress should have been made.
When a new breed is developed, some guidelines (a standard) have to
be drawn up...and over time, some changes may be made. Still, turning a DQ
into a new breed sounds pretty stupid to me, too. Someone may call it a
"rare" auality, but it isn't...it's just something that isn't allowed.
Many of us would prefer that the minimum IQ required of dog show
exhibitors be at least 130 ... but that ain't gonna happen, either.
If a bunch of dogs with the same DQ find favor with people who want
to make those dogs into a new breed, what do you REALLY think about it? I
wrote a couple of weeks ago that then we should make coated GSDs into a new
breed, too. Not long ago, right here on this list, there was a bit of
hell raised about some guy on the left coast who was advertising his
oversize Shepherds as a new, special breed....as I recall, nobody thought
much of that and wanted to drum the fellow off the planet. Same with those
panda dogs.
But white is now going to be OK?

Ridiculous.
