I agree to some extent.  Until there is some genetic test....it's still just
speculation...so people can gossip about any dog all they want, but it doesn't
mean didley unless a genetic link is found.   Now that doesn't mean that I will
rush out and breed to a dog that has had several progeny die young, especially
if the bitch of the progeny has a similar pedigree to mine, but that is just
about making educated choices.  Just because a breeding may not be right for my
bitch doesn't mean it won't be right for someone else's.

My favorite (not) comment is when people say, oh don't breed to that dog, he
produces bloat (or whatever) because they've "heard" of some of his offspring
dying from it, but they can't answer you when you ask what the bitch produces
or even what is in her pedigree.

What causes bloat?  Well I'm sure it's genetics, but no not a bloat gene...just
a flaw in the make up of the digestive tract.  This flaw may or may not cause
problems.  I do think kennel dogs are more prone to it with all the running
back and forth in the kennel.  Alot of energy but no where to go; though I
don't have to be told that plenty of house dogs die from it too.

Knock on wood, but I haven't had a dog die of bloat either....of course it
hasn't been 40 years yet. :o)

I'd like to clear something up with your question below concerning "a dog
producing bloat when bred to a certain line"!  Please know and understand
there is NO PROOF whatsoever that bloat is in any line!!!  I've studied this
and seriously have, in my more than 40 years of breeding, NEVER had
ONE case of bloat or torsion.  Recently, I happily, saw that there IS proof
pretty much from research on this ailment that it is caused by other means.
Also, as mentioned, even in horses, and I've done them as well, I feel that
only because a "stud" is able to produce more progeny than a "dam" most
faults and/or good things are blamed/given credit to HIM.  Try to remember
the dams as their input is vital to any offspring.  Most of us old timers do
know what did and/or did not come from Lance and/or "GV Ch. Kismet's Sight
for Sore Eyes - ROM etc. etc.  a fine dog.  Oh, those same folks
produced many really splendid dogs, like BANKER for instance!!  The Fords
did the same in giving us not only LANCE but other goodies also in
the bitch dept.   To categorize these things as you seem to feel is
possible, to me isn't possible at all.    JMHO    Norma the not norma L

What is the purpose of suggesting that a stud dog is impacting our breed in
a positive/negative way, without indicating what the pro's/con's are.  It
appears that someone will mention that a GV/Popular Stud Dog  is causing
harm, or helping  our breed, but the "poster" leaves us guessing as to how.
Why name the popular stud dog, Dallas/Lance, yet leave us guessing about who
the GV is that's impacting our breed in a negative manner.  If your willing
to make the suggestion, give us the specifics.
I want to know that a given dog is producing bloat when bred to a certain
line.  I want a better shoulder.  ETC.
Sincerely,   Laura Havis
