Every breeder should stand behind their puppies - and in some states there are
puppy lemon laws to help you decide to do the right thing . . The breeder
should contact the owner of the dog and see what they want to do. then proceed
accordingly . . . .BUT
I went back and read 4 or 5 articles about EPI - and not one article stated
that this was definitely a  hereditary problem - they said because of the
number of cases in GSD that there might be a hereditary factor . . . .But
even if it has a hereditary cause, does it take one or two parents to produce
the problem? Â
Before we go after someone to pull their GV from breeding - a GV gets numerous
breeding's - if he is going to produce a problem - it will probably show up in
several litters.  Since this problem shows up in young dogs primarily (per
the articles I read) I would guess that the pups have to get to 18
months before the problem is diagnosed.   The GV by that time has produced
many litters - and I can bet that if it is a common problem - we would of heard
about it - People are always ready to spread that sort of word around. Â

iagnosed with EPI. I proceeded to call every person who had purchased a puppy
rom that litter to tell them about Nichole. Fortunately she was the only one
ith EPI in that litter. I was glad that it was the puppy that I kept instead

ne that I sold. I then took the sire and dam OUT of the breeding program. But
hat probably is not going to happen with the GV who is the sire of this dog
hat you are talking about. But it should. The only way that we as breeders are
oing to eliminate this horrible disease is to not breed the animals or their
ittermates who have it. When you breed
a litter of puppies you have no control over what the genes are going to
roduce sometimes. But if you start with healthy genes you have a lot better
hance of producing healthy puppies.
