So getting good ones, and finishing dogs is about who you know.
When you think about it, you can research all that you want, but would
breeder
from X sell to newbie from Y if you've never heard of him/her?Along would
come
someone less scrupulous, then another newbie has a sad story to tell.

Half of you would have no idea I existed without this list, and if I
called your
house looking for a puppy with no one to vouch for me, it would not have
happen.

I got my dog from a breeder in my club. He watched me for two years, and
he
decided it was time for me to get a show dog, he found one for me, and he
gives
good advice (another shameless plug for the GSDCNO!) Without that
breeder, it
might have been dog #3, 4 or 5 before I got what I wanted. I've already
gone
through a few, looking for a female.

The point is that new folks get all kinds of advice, and it does not
always jibe
with real life. I don't think I would have arrived any faster had I did it

exactly the way the books told me. Stuff happens, or doesn't. The newbie
is a
chance, the dog is a chance. As Jessica pointed out, the only way to get
some
measure of success is to stick with the person.

Below is my response to Tom - it is a similar response I had to Carol
Moore in
private e-mail..

* But see, that is where the good mentor comes in to play ;-) In our
breed,
newbies CAN and do finish dogs easily. Argus has 8 champions in 7 litters
(with
about 8 more close to finishing). One of those dogs was finished by a
brand new
person with two specialty wins, two more were finished by Junior handlers
- the
bitch with a specialty major and the brother with three majors. Another
bitch
finished, also with a brand new person and has two specialty majors. They
all
had very good mentors who taught them how to condition dogs, suggested
where to
enter and helped them with handling. They can do it and it doesn have to
take
years - all those dogs finished before or around the age of 2 years old.

New people CAN finish dogs easily - maybe not in Shepherds, but then
shepherdom
is a whole different world - which is very unfortunate. Maybe because of
the
difficulty of getting showdogs, and the shows themselves, people not only
get
discouraged, but move on to a different breed.*

Strictly my opinion...
