I could tell you I wouldn't sign it. I don't want the GSDCA governing my
breeding program. It is not their business to govern how many litters I
breed. In case some have forgotten.we must breed litters in order to have
entries at shows. If you have declining litters..then expect more declining
entries. this year I had 4 litters..last year I had one.it has become
fashionable to breed less, because "animal rights thinking" has even
permeated even the show world. Back in the day, well known prominent
kennels bred many litters..no one gasped or questioned the care of the
animals or called them puppy mills. The quality and care the animals
received was evident. Every litter was well cared for and well thought
out..Lack of numbers does not insure quality of care. I am certain their
are those who breed only one litter a year and don't provide the proper
care for the puppies. As for OFA..again, none of their business. Based on
this a dog with DJD 1 shouldn't be bred. Tell that to all the owners of
Bull's 30 champions.On the flip side I have known OFA dogs to produce an
inordinate number of dysplastic progeny. So which would be best..the dog
with numbers producing problems..or the dog with no numbers producing very
few problems. As breeders we should use all tools to evaluate breeding
animals. Some are OFA zealots..that is fine..however they wouldn't think
twice about breeding to a dog with extremely poor temperament. I tend to
view things differently, but that is what makes each person breeding
program unique. Everything is a case by case basis. there is no cut an
dried formula to govern care and ethics or what should or shouldn't be
bred.Every dog must stand on his own merit..every breeder must stand on
their own merit. I am not saying a Code of Ethics to outline a basic
standard of care would not be a good thing, but when it comes to what
should or shouldn't be bred, how many times you should breed, this is where
I draw the line.. So I will pose a question as the Devil's advocate..If a
stringent and enforced GSDCA Code of Ethics was in place, could we expect
the GSDCA to be involved in litigation with every violator? Who will pay
for this litigation? Who is going to inspect each kennel and see that the
standard of care is maintained? Just curious where this money and manpower
is going to come from. Christine
