Great story I wish I would have seen her. Each young handler gives me hope for
the breed.

Subject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] Brag, which I never do
About two months ago a family came out to the Saturday class to look at
puppies. The father is from Lebanon and had never owned a dog. But, the two
kids, Adam at 7 and Summer at 9 convinced them to come to look at puppies.
Tedi had decided to keep three of the O'Connor/Honey puppies, but they
wanted to see them. As we watched the kids were so good with the puppies,
they sat and played together, and Tedi decided to sell them the third pick,
Plato.
The family came to each class as Summer said she wanted to learn to
handle. She is taking classes in guitar and horse riding, and so I taught her
all I knew about handling, (not that much). Each week I showed her more, and
she was encouraged by Tom and Vivian Brown.
I bought her the Moses Strickland book, (I got Adam a book on Harleys, he
is enthralled with them). They then came to Eucanuba where they met the
real Harley Davidson, and also talked to Paula. I grabbed Jimmy and had him
sign her book and take a picture together. He said some nice things to
Summer, mostly not to listen to me about handling.
Then a couple of weeks ago, Bill Basu came to class and spent some time
with Summer, and encouraged her further.
This weekend they came to the show in Santa Maria. I planned to show
Kierkegaard myself and get back in the ring. But, instead, we handed the lead
to
Summer and in she went.
Everyone gave her advice, Cindy, Charlonna, Grace, Paul Root, The Guz and
Bill Basu. I told her to listen to me, and ignore all the rest.
She was wowed to be in the ring with Jerry Guzman and did the best she
could.
She won the class, and then went in to show for Best Puppy. She did a
fantastic job, and walked out with the trophy.
I guess I can brag about the dog, he is mine. But, I have to admit I was
tickled to see the grin on her face, and am so pleased that Rita and Mike
said so many kind things to her. And, she listened.
Summer has more talent than I have ever seen in a young handler, except
perhaps for Leslie. I just hope it sticks. I know tonight she is sleeping
with the ribbon.
