Remember Brackett came from a time and built his principles on large
breeding kennels owned by the (very) wealthy with lots of kennel help as the
"norm". They experimented, they bred and grew out entire litters and culled
the problems...I don't have the stomach for the later!
I love my boys. I've been fortunate to have had a few outstanding bitches
and leased a few others w/o becoming "over-dogged".

I agree with him in that through the years, (in the show ring at
least) the quality of bitches is greater than that of the males.
Ellen Heintz once told me to have a good foundation in GSDs, you
should have 4 extraordinarily good bitches. She said that you could
always breed to an outstanding stud dog--you didn't have to own him.
(She also said that "black and tans" were a dime a dozen, but I never
agreed with that. LOL) Brackett, for one, realized the importance of
GOOD bitches in a breeding program. Nowadays many breed to the flavor-
of-the-month stud dog, not necessarily because of his attributes (ie
pedigree et al) but because he's done a lot of winning. FUBAR.
