I like Reno. I live here. I love the mountains, the dry climate and Lake
Tahoe - just 30 minutes away. Not sure why everyone does not live here. I

If I remember right, the members voted for this policy and I did not see
anything on a GSDCA club wide ballot overturning that policy, yet it is
ignored in the setting of location schedules.
The membership is not always right, but then neither are its leaders. I
remember setting on the board and having to reverse course for thinking
something was a good idea but it was not acceptable to the members. I get
that. But like it or not this is a non-profit club in which the power is
with the membership. So their will rules even when it is wrong.
For most of my 77 years on this planet I have been involved with non-profit
groups. Business enterprises are far easier. If you are the owner you do as
you please, but with a non-profit you have to lead the members. It you
cannot get their consent then you cannot move forward. Frustrating, slow,
darn those ignorant members! But if you can't lead them you can't go forward
anyway. They do not need any one leader. They can refuse to follow and then
you are stuck with leading nothing, nowhere. You have to get consent or you
have to stop and find out why they are not following.
One of the easiest ways to lose your leadership is to decide and inform. You
know - this is what we are going to do and don't ask why. Doesn't work with
free minded people, especially those who reflect the spirit of the noble
GSD.
Why are we changing locations? We are not stupid. Tell us. Who knows, we
might agree. But, you say, the lists and forums are not the appropriate
place for those discussion and information. Nonsense. Information goes
everywhere once it is give out anyway, so allowing the public to be privy to
it is not destructive. Who knows, others might want to join an open club.
But executive sessions will kill your relationship with those who you inform
rather than include in the discussions.
And speaking of open discussions, we had one once about locations and a
policy was set. Set but ignored. For good reason? Those reasons should go
into the reforming of a policy and if the policy was set by the membership
than that is the place where it should be changed, amended or altered.
Circumventing the membership who voted is neither wise or reasonable. If the
policy is wrong, tell us why and allow us to reconsider it. Do not tell us
by ignoring our will that we are powerless, ignorant are without value to
the issue.
