Yes, the board fiscal responsibility for the club and saving money is a
good thing. But if you create rebellion in the process, you will find out
that you will lose members, support and entries, even when it is assumed
that saving money was a good idea. That is, you can lead a smaller and
smaller number of members to a money saving venue until it is not
profitable also.
And what if the members are wrong? What if they want a rotating location
and it does not pencil out financially? What if we do not reach our
financial goals? Will the club fail? Will the GSDCA cease to exist?
No, we should strive to make a profit and stay solvent, but that will
happen best if we stay focused on the general purpose of the club and the
desire of those who make it work - the members. What I am saying is that
the GSDCA is not a for-profit enterprise. It is not about making profits
but about the dogs. They are our ultimate end purpose. We hold in trust the
future of the breed and it is the members who do the dogs, so to speak. Let
us always be careful to not invert this organization to the point that the
power is in the hands of those who make decisions for reasons that are not
important to those who should have the power, the members. Companies,
corporations and nations fail when the system becomes inverted and the
power is no longer where it should be. We should always be thinking of the
dogs, and those who exhibit them. If they are not coming along with our
leadership, then there is something structurally wrong.
Years ago a young man came to me for advice. He had just graduated from
seminary and wanted me to help him find a church to pastor. I knew of a
small group meeting in a home in a near-by city and I asked him to go speak
with them and see if they would accept his leadership. He said he would not
go. They were too small. He wanted to pastor a large church like the one I
served. Then I gave him some advice that I was given many years before by a
very wise man, my father. I told him to go outside and start walking and to
occasionally look back to see if anyone was following. If they were, then
he was their leader. If not, then he was just out for a walk.
Sometimes we forget that our leadership is not an isolated pinnacle of
power. It is a place of service. Either convince them or go by yourself for
your walk.
