That would explain the shed just before whelping, but 9 weeks prior, a wolf
bitch has NO clue where she will whelp. So that is not the answer. I still
think it is because they think they look better naked.
Actually, most wolves come in heat once a year, in the spring, which would
make the shed in line with loosing the heavy winter coat. The hormones could
cause added release of coat. It is passed on to our dogs, GSD's in particular
because our dogs are more natural than many other breeds. There are breeds
that do not shed at heats. Can't remember off the top of my head, I don't deal
in other breeds much, except for training, and since most of my clients don't
show, neutering is one of the issues I cover.
My rather uneducated guess is that it is a combination of hormones and wolf
like timing. You might take your question to a vet school.

I did not get many responses, so assume people just don't know. But I am
sharing the one response I did get that makes PERFECT sense!
in the "wolf" days, the bitch lined her nest with the coat she was shedding -
provided a nice warm and soft place for her babies.
Just wanted to share, I thought it was great info. And if you think about it,
when the bitch gets up from where she was laying all night it kind of resembles
a nest, poof! kind of like a porcupine, all the hair is around them. Well at
least that is how it is here.
