Apparently there is a great misunderstanding about the schutzund protection phase and protection dogs. I have one dog in particular that came into the rescue that was an extremely driven dog and was almost to the point of being vicious. I determined that she was just never taught proper etiquette and also didn't understand play drive at all, she only understood that she was going to save her people by threatening the source. After going out to the schutzund field, she learned play drive and learned that she didn't need to bite people. Essentially, she had to be taught to bite on command so she could be taught that she shouldn't do it at any other time. Granted, she is an extreme case. However, before the sport of schutzund gets a bad rap, there is a HUGE difference in the protection phase of the sport and dogs that are protection trained dogs. Just my two cents worth!
