All, would appreciate any comments, sug= gestions from you especially if you
have been down this road with a dog req= uiring both ACL's repaired. Please
see my friend's email below. = I have consulted with my vet on this and he
isrecommending having both AC= Ls repaired at same time due to fistula
problem and prednisone start/stop r= outine if owners decide on surgery.
Myfriend obviously has a b= ig decision to make here. Please respond to me
privately at hen= ry_rodrique@xxxxxxxxx[1] Thanks for your help

Hi Henry,

Hope you are well and enjoying the summ= er! I'm reaching out to get your
thoughts recognizing that you are so famil= iar with the German Shepherd
breed. Our shepherd, Georgia, will be 6 = years old next month. About 7
months ago, we began treatment with pre= dnisone, flagyl, cephalexin for
perianal fistulas. Later my husband b= egan applying a topical cream called
Protopic ointment. The vet said = this condition is caused by an autoimmune
disorder. As a result of th= e prednisone, Georgia gained a lot of weight
and went from 70 pounds in Jan= uary to 98.8 pounds as of yesterday.
Shortlythereafter, Georgia bega= n limping, and the vet suspected a torn ACL
in her rear leg. She said= surgery was not an option until we resolved the
perianal fistulas, and she= was off the meds. Just a few weeks ago, she
began limping on the oth= er side and yesterday's X-rays confirmed both rear
legs have torn ACLs, and= there is a possibility that we may also have one
orboth miniscus tears bu= t won't know for certain unless we proceed with
surgery. Apparently t= he prednisone causes the ligaments to stretch which
resulted in susceptibil= ity to traumatic injury for what otherwise would be
a minor incident, e.g.,= stepping in gopher hole, etc. The combination of
favoring the other = leg and gaining additional weight from the prednisone
increased the likelih= ood of the second torn ACL. We now have Georgia on
tramadol for contr= ol of pain in addition to the other meds.

My question to you is where to go from = here? We are told that both knees
require surgery by a specialist.&nb= sp; Post op, she will most likely
require an additional 6 months of vigorou= s treatment for the fistulas and
may be on these meds for life. Since= I was at work and my husband has been
taking Georgia to the vet, we plan t= o conference call on Friday with both
vets to get more information and ask = questions. The vet said our options
are surgery or euthanize. C= an you please shed any light on any
experiencesyou have had with either th= e PF or ACL/miniscus injuries in
shepherds? We need to make a decisio= n quickly because Georgia is in a
great deal of pain but want to make the b= est decision for her with the
infowe have.

Thanks!
