Many of you remember the 35W bridge that collapsed over the Mississippi last
year in August. Well, after 14 months of working 24 hours a day, the new bridge
opened for business this morning. Above is the link to watch the opening of the
bridge.. Pretty emotional for most Minnesotans as was the collapse in the first
place.
My mom works for MnDOT and had the opportunity to walk the bridge last week and
was very very impressed.
Bridge facts:
* Lighting is all LED lightening, environmentally friendly.
* 55 million pounds of rebar
* 5 lanes of traffic
* Space for light rail
* The concrete structrures on either side of the bridge denote
you are traveling over water
* There are holding tanks under the bridge for rain water and
snow run-off. Water is then saved and processed and sent
into the river as clean water to help promote heatlthy
waterways.
* 326 (I think) sensors to monitor the bridge and its structural
supports
* FlatIron Construction worked 24 hours a day for the last year
and is making a bonus of 27 million dollars for having it open
three months before the scheduled date (December 25th).
Well worth it most MN folks have agreed.
To make this all GSD related, I can now go back to my tracking instructor
without having to take the LONG scenic route! I guess I might have to now!
Besides, I really want to go over the bridge sometime!
