This new club has (or had at the time of the meeting) 12 members who owned 30 imported BBS which are foreign-registered and not AKC-registered. Any way you look at it, that is just not diverse enough of a population of people and dogs as necessary to get this breed and club into the Herding Group... or even the Miscellaneous Class for that matter!! They would go where all new-to-AKC breeds go and where AWSA asked that all interested owners of wGSDs/WSs should have their dogs go: into AKC's FSS. Also, for those who are not aware, the FSS is strictly a *recording* service, similar to the ILP, or whatever they are calling it now, except that FSS dogs are allowed to be un neutered and still be able to use the service. Once a breed goes to the FSS, the task of picking and "approving" the Parent Club for that breed belongs to AKC alone. Therefore, GSDCA would not be putting any sort of stamp of approval on that or ANY other club. If a letter would have been granted, it would have simply allowed the BBS people to get going on the road to full recognition, which would be a VERY long way off into the future. You simply cannot compare this to the Mini American Shepherd as there were SCADS of those dogs and their owners already in existence. And that is why they will be in the Herding Group very soon. Not the case for any independent "white" shepherd dog! >There are several clubs all going different directions and wanting different >things. >How can we choose between them or should we? ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ No. The GSDCA should not. As I stated above, the entity whose responsibility it would be to pick the parent club from among any and all existing clubs, is AKC alone! >Possibly if there was a more defined group and a more defined agenda amongst >them >all, then we could move forward without choosing sides within the white clubs. The members and current Board of AWSA have stated they are very open to the possibility of working with the wGSD clubs to see if we can find some compromise. After all... We can all come together for the betterment of the health and genetics of wGSDs/WSs via the WS H&G Project. So why not? To this end, a Facebook group was established for discussion. I and others from this discussion list have joined that group, but to date, no one has said anything. Maybe everyone has been very busy with showing or Spring puppies or whatever? For those who do not know the whole story... AWSA was going to make another presentation to update the GSDCA on what has been going on since our last such presentation. Our longtime "delegate" to GSDCA, Ms. Melanie Fuellgraf, was going to attend the meeting, along with our current club President and Breed Recognition Committee (BRC) Chair to present to the Board. However, at the very last minute, it came to the attention of our (AWSA) Board of Directors ***from Melanie***, that if the White Shepherd or the subject of breed separation was brought up, that GSDCA would shut it down and any vote on a letter or whatever would automatically fail. It didn't seem logical for AWSA members to pay good money to fly to the meeting and not be able to say or do anything, so plans for AWSA to attend were cancelled. Melanie went by herself to represent the "BBS Club of America", a club none of us even knew existed. She did this, despite the fact that she was still a member of AWSA and, supposedly, working with AWSA and its BRC on recognition on the WS as a separate breed. The AWSA club was totally blind sided by this very severe conflict of interest on Mel's part. This new club is made up of former members of AWSA and/or the United WS Club (UKC) who have imported dogs from Europe and are under the very incorrect assumption that their homebred dogs are Berger Blanc Suisse. They are NOT. Unless something changes, this is and will remain, totally untrue. Our North American white dogs, whatever we choose to call them, which were imported back into Europe and other countries and used to "create" the BBS have, by decree of the Swiss parent club for the BBS breed, been cut OUT of the BBS gene pool because they either have German Shepherds close-up in their pedigrees, or because they are actually registered with AKC as German Shepherds themselves. Not every FCI country must abide by this Swiss club decree, but most will or have. If GSDCA had granted a letter to the "BBS Club of America", only those existing 30 dogs plus any that will be imported in the future, would be eligible to enter the FSS as "Berger Blanc Suisse". And that is the story of that, in a nutshell. Hope it makes sense and helps to clear up any confusion. -- Karen C.
