Thank you, Penny, for sharing the poem. Since moving here, I haven't found
all my books...some are probably still not unpacked (there really are too
many, if that's possible)...so I don't know where my copy of Beautiful Joe
is...but I'm sure it's here somewhere... I have read it probably 15 or 20
times since the first time........just not lately.
That is the poem, however...and I agree with it!

My third grade teacher, Mrs Birdsall read us Beautiful Joe (and also
The Secret Garden). I have the book too! Here's part of the poem
(copied verbatim):
"Do doggies gang to heaven, Dad?
Will oor auld Donal gang?
For noo to tak' him, father. wi' us,
Wad be maist awfu' wrang.
..."Oor Donald's no like ither dogs,
He'll no be lockit oot,
If Donald's no let into heaven
I'll no gang there one foot."
(This is obviously some kind of Scottish dialect, but I think you get
the idea of the poem.) I read Beautiful Joe about once a year--what a
great book!
