In the case of field Irish, *some* fit the Standard. Most
do not! And in the case of the FDSB (Field Dog Stud Book)
Red setter, it is considered a totally different breed by
the members of the Irish Setter Club of America. It's also
not a purebred Irish setter! Pointer, English setter and,
I believe, Brittany blood were added several decades ago
to improve size, speed and overall field performance.
That's why FDSB Red setters are NOT eligible for AKC
reciprocal registration today: the only breed so denied.
This might all be changing very soon... or not.
Recently, the Irish setter PC Board went to AKC and asked
that AKC register and recognize the FDSB Red setter AS AN
IRISH SETTER. And AKC said yes!! This is totally contrary
to the wishes of the majority of the membership of ISCA
and was made without any member input or a vote. There is
now a huge fight going on to stop this. Unfortunately, the
PC members are going to have their work cut out for them.
Never underestimate the ability of AKC to screw people
over or contribute to the ruin of perfectly good breeds!!
