But by suggesting that they try matches or UKC or another type of show
first, this will make them happy, help build their confidence, they gain
some experience and knowledge about the breed and how to handle, plus they
will begin to see what type of dogs are winning and figure it out themselves
and eventually get another dog that is more competitive. Then there are
more new people showing. Let's face it, clubs are folding because of lack
of money and lack of entries and we need more people showing.

Why not be honest about the conformation and suggest obedience, agility,
tracking, herding or rally. You could offer to help educate them about the
breed so that maybe, when they are ready, and if they are still interested in
conformation they would make a better more informed choice. Who knows, maybe
they'd even buy a dog from you. That's what I did, although the GSD people
just said unkind things about my dog behind my back, but just loud enough for
me to hear. I got educated and when I finally got a conformation dog I got a
good one.
