I want to add also that most people starting out may only have one dog to
show or just a couple of dogs. If they are told their dog isn't show
quality (for lets say the AKC ring) and told they should get another dog,
their world is shattered, they are embarrassed and now they have this dog
that someone told them isn't good enough to show (and they thought it was
beautiful) - what do you think they will do? They quit. It's not easy to
just go get another dog. Some people only have so much room and only want a
few dogs in their household, they don't just go out and buy another one -
maybe they don't even want to breed. So why shatter their dream in an
instant.
But by suggesting that they try matches or UKC or another type of show
first, this will make them happy, help build their confidence, they gain
some experience and knowledge about the breed and how to handle, plus they
will begin to see what type of dogs are winning and figure it out themselves
and eventually get another dog that is more competitive. Then there are
more new people showing. Let's face it, clubs are folding because of lack
of money and lack of entries and we need more people showing.
