To get the ice out of a frozen bucket quickly, turn it upside down (not in  
the dog run!), 
and pour a little lukewarm water over it so it runs down the sides.   The ice 
will drop
with a thunk - just like a popsicle!    I try to keep them  in an out of the 
way part of 
the yard; otherwise, it starts to  look like an igloo construction  zone <G>.
 
I agree it helps to dump the buckets in the evening, but right now, they're  
frozen 
within a few hours in Utah :-(

Woke up in  Sun City, California this morning to frozen water pipes!!  The 
dog's  water bucket was frozen SOLID!!  My outdoor thermometer says 10  
degrees F at 7:30.  Glad I have earthquake preparedness water on  hand!!
