Auburn ready to enforce dog laws

Auburn residents who own what are considered to be vicious dogs will soon
need to make a trip to City Hall to register their pets.

The breeds named are Doberman Pinscher, Rotweiller, Pit Bull and Chow. Any
dog with any characteristics of those breeds must be registered.

Requiring the registration is simply a matter of safety, said Mayor Dewey
Roche.

?Any dog will bite under certain circumstances, but this category of dogs
is more likely to,? Roche said at the Auburn City Council meeting Monday
evening.

Auburn Police Chief Scott Harmon said the Auburn ordinance regarding dogs
was basically the same as Russellville's. He met with Russellville Code
Enforcement Officer Bill Decker to discuss enforcing the vicious dog
registration.

Roche said the city will put a notice in the paper to give people time to
register their dogs before they start issuing citations.

?We want to be fair and give the people advance warning,? Roche said.

Those who own a ?vicious dog? must register the dog with the city.
Registration will cost $20 a year and owners must show proof of insurance in
order to receive a vicious dog license.

State Farm Insurance Agent John Mardis said that most homeowner policies
automatically cover dogs. Renters insurance policies also cover dogs, Mardis
explained.

?It can vary company to company,? he added.

Roche said he doesn't believe there are that many dogs in Auburn that need
to be registered. Harmon, Roche and other city leaders will be looking for
any such dogs and making sure their owners have them registered. When a dog
is registered the owner will be given a tag to put on the dog.

When new residents move into the city, they will be informed of the
requirement when signing up for water.
