Some of you know I judge Terriers in addition to the Herding
breeds. One of my favorite breeds is the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, a
breed (like AmStaffs) often confused with pitbulls.
There is a little red Stafford in my area who happens to be quite a
favorite of mine...I loved his dam, and I would give this dog a room in
my house if the owners would give him up.
I was sitting outside a ring watching judging at a local show and
all of a sudden this 40 pound bundle of muscle landed on me, apparently
from space, licking my face and wriggling all over... I have to admit
my first instinct was to scream and pull this thing off me, and then I
realized it was my little red friend...........he was SO HAPPY to see
me, he'd dragged his owner towards me and she dropped the lead so he
could greet me. It was quite a moment, considering he nearly knocked me
and my chair over, and there were a few people nearby who screamed........
I'm sure that if there'd been any AR people there they'd have spread
the word that there'd been an attack...but I have to tell you, while I
am fully aware that there are pitbull attacks, and that Staffords and
AmStaffs were bred to fight, that the majority of the Staffords and
AmStaffs, Bullterriers, Mini Bullterriers, and the pitbulls I've known
were all wonderful pets, loving and funny dogs you'd enjoy. No, they
never back down from a challenge, that's true. And some are encouraged
to be mean...it makes their otherwise lacking in masculinity owners feel
like big shots.
I also know there's at least one person on this list who supports
BSL...wonder how he feels now that his breed, the German Shepherd, is
coming under attack.
Lack of education is no excuse. We are all dog owners...we need to
wake up. What happens to the pitbull types today can and probably will
happen to all breeds in the not too distant future.
