The best person to answer that is the person who didn't make it. It means
a lot to them and they would have loved to be in the other half, (as you
call it).
Or, if you want another person to ask, ask the person who won it. They
sure think it means a lot.
Those who think going Select doesn't have much meaning are those who
didn't compete. Everyone else who took their champion into the ring knows the
value, win or lose.
And, as I have tried to explain, since we breed only to improve the breed,
(nevermind what Flower Boy says), and every year we do so by breeding
correctly, some day every dog in the ring should be Select quality. Or, are
there breeders trying to breed less than a perfect dog?
