The bottom line is, as breeders, we are running interference with the laws of natural selection. Rather than letting nature take its course breeders decide which gene's are most likely to be carried forward from generation to generation. Every time we "alter" an animal, and we hide that "alteration" from the public, that alteration is carried forward to contribute to future problems in the breed; the breeder without knowledge of the alteration makes decisions lacking the full slate of information they should have had access to.... Tails, coloring dogs, taping ears, will perpetuate those issues, but how about tacking a pups stomach out of fear that it might be prone to bloat....should that animal be in the gene pool...at least if an animal bloats(and survives) a breeder can make an educated decision as to whether or not to keep the animal in the gene pool(but it should be made known the animal bloated)....jmo...
