Of course Norma, the first thing a reputable vet does is to express the anal 
gland.  Even if there does not seem to be a serious  problem there, they 
usually give a 2 week antibiotic regiment if the anal gland is really full 
and smells worse than usual.  I did this with my Brenda Lee bitch and it 
worked for a # of years.  Then the drainage started again and when I cleaned 
her up I saw the hole--the fistula had started.  We kept her alive for a 
number of years with constant cleaning and low dose antibiotics.  We lost 
her to DM at age 10.   Sandi
