Kathy I could not agree more.
Our line generally lives 10 plus years. We recently lost a very large
female--25 inches-- at 13 plus years.
i think the gene pool is important but equally important is diet and avoidance
of chemical toxins in the environment-- such as chemicals on the grass or
kennel etc. as well as what we use for "their benefit".
We have them for such a short time so be kind and help them live a long
fruitful life.

This isn't necessarily true. We have as some of you know, a Caucasion
Ovtcharka.
She is about 31 inches tall and conservatively now at maturity 145 lbs.
this breed lives a healthy , robust 12-15 years. It is nothing to see a 13
y/o ovtcharka still doing its guardian thing.
I believe many of our problems can be linked directly to over vaccination,
over medication, and linebreeding. This ovtcharka bitch can eat ANYTHING.
She never , ever gets diarrhea, regardless of the food, or the prey, or
scraps...NEVER.
As Barbara Williams so perfectly put it, we are breeding "hot house
dogs"....and not just us, many breeds are falling into this. Dogs that
can't eat, can't breed, can't work.
We see dobies dropping of heart attacks at 4 and 5, we see Danes, and other
breeds barely making it to middle age.
We see dogs in
our OWN breed dying before 4 years of age, tragically, as
with Hudson, and Con Man...such nice dogs with such great promise . A loss
to our breed.. Such a huge , huge loss to their loving owners...my heart
just breaks for them all. Such nice people too.
Am I saying stop close linebreeding, etc? No. It is a calculated risk for
us all.
I do believe however that over vaccination, and the rampant use of things
like antibiotics, and flea/tick pills may be doing more harm than we
realize. Genetics plays an obvious and huge role....(which is why we try
to very carefully incorporate import lines)
So size doesn't necessarily have much to do with it...vitality, vigor,
health...comes in all sizes.
