I suppose that you cope by loving them as hard as you can
for as long as you can. Oh... and feeding them a natural
(raw) diet might help also. Wendy Volhard started with
Newfoundlands. After she developed her diet in 1972,
she "tested" the formula by raising several generations
of Newfs of her own breeding on it. I believe she was
routinely getting dogs to live to 12 or 13 years or more.
