The Dane folks have made great strides in longevity (as have
we) because they have made it a goal in their breeding programs. It
used to be unusual for a Dane to live beyond seven or eight years. Now
we see many into their teens. At the national there was shown an eleven
year old who looked great, got around that ring just fine, and had
attitude that proved she was still having a fine time showing. OTOH, we
seem to be going backwards, dogs dying at three, four years old. The
"thirteen club" is a giant step in the right direction, but we have way
to many who are breeding strictly for the win rather than for the health
and longevity of the dogs as well. Carolyn
