I do not know if it would be possible today as Euro and American bred GSDs are
different today.
Type was similar back in the 50's and 60's not so much today. Still some old
excellent bloodlines
out there that people have maintained and crossed right that possibly might
work. There does
seem to be a bottleneck in both Euro and American bred GSDs but not all
bloodlines are affected
today. Euro breeders do not turn lose of their good ones only to friends or
relatives of people that came to
the USA to stay. This is how the good Euro GSDs arrived years ago and still can
today.

remember reading a few years ago that the basenji breeders
here were very concerned with their gene pool and they went
to the Mother-land of the breed Africa and imported dogs
from there to increase/improve their gene pool. I believe
the AKC allowed the registration of dogs that had an African
parent, anyway the experiment was successful if my memory is

at UC Davis Veterinary College that I attended a few years
ago warned breeders of over breeding to the
"popular" stud dog! They warned of potential
problems generations down the line because of a shrinking
gene pool.
I think we have
a way to improve/increase the gene pool of the GSD.
Importing and breeding to European bloodlines is a very good
option! Evidently before my time in the breed this was done
all the time in the late 1950s and 1960s, wasn't Lance
half German/European? A few breeders today are doing it.
This could be another outstanding topic for the January 2018
