[ SHOWGSD-L ] An Interesting article on the White GSD

When I first recognized the quality of a German shepherd it was through a
friend of mine, George Brew. George raced a white German shepherd dog sled
team around the world, and bred for the pure whites for his team.
His dogs lived in Michigan in the woods with no dog houses or heat. He
would worm them twice a year by putting Boraxo in the their drinking water.
They lived outside in the Winter and were the healthiest dogs I have ever
seen. They mostly lived to be 13 to 15, and I guess if they were not hardy,
they just died. He used to have to go out in the morning to break the ice in
their buckets, so they could have drinking water.
I was so frightened of his lead dog Baron. The dog was massive and always
seemed to want to tear off my head. George always kept him chained unless
he was hooked to the dog sled.
Then after I got to know the breed better, Tedi and I went to his home
one day. No one was home and his dog was loose, so, I grabbed him and put
him back on his chain. When I called George to tell him, he started
laughing. That was Baron.
I never believed that white shepherds meant health problems with the color,
but I know some think that way.
Everyone is entitled to their opinions, and we need to respect them, but we
don't have to agree. I tend to listen to everyone, but decide for myself
what I believe.
