Years ago when Tedi was gone, I was in charge of whelping a litter. The
first puppy was born dead, and so was the second one. But, I was determined
not to lose a second puppy.
I moved my chair so I was sitting in the sun and put the puppy on my bare
chest and waited for the next pup. After about 20 minutes I noticed what I
thought was a gasp from the puppy. But, I thought maybe I imagined it. Then
after another ten minutes or so, another breath and this went on for an
hour or so, while I whelped the rest of the litter. The puppy lived and
after a week or so, was just like the rest of the litter.
I have learned never to give up. When we started we were told to wrap a
puppy that appears dead in a towel and put him on the door of the oven with a
little heat. That is probably outdated, but Tedi never gives up on a puppy,
and will work on them for an hour, even if there seems to be no chance.
It can be a real shock to see what appears to be a loss turn into a live
pup. I think all breeders have experienced something like this.
