Sorry to say this, but the GSDCA is called that for a reason-- it only really concerns GSDs. If a dog is truly great, he will go select during his lifetime-- maybe not his first time out or his second time out, but he will go select. The great ones cannot be denied. That is my opinion. We are not a club of dogs and if your dog does well competing against dogs he is in the parade of greats. He must do well against GSDs competing at our National show against the top GSDs in the country and Canada and Mexico and whoever else wants to show up. And being judged by what I think are the best judges of GSDs, namely long time breeders of GSDs. JMO. Having said all of that, I could care less if they expand the parade of greats to other dogs. Just dumbing it down. Sam -----Original Message----- From: showgsd-l-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:showgsd-l-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Paula M. I don't understand the rationale of most of these responses. (Not picking on you, Carol, just adding up all the responses.) You are right, Carol. Grand Champion by itself does not mean a great dog, anymore than Champion does. By that same LOGIC, neither does GV, GVX, Select, or Select Excellent. AOE Select Excellent, I will grant, is a bit more of an achievement of a great dog; more than one judge's opinion about that particular dog puts it above the rest. The old OFA CHIC was hard to achieve. Many dogs still can't get the new, dumbed down one because they can't even pass the TC. Some because they can't pass hips &/or elbows!!! Yet these same dogs are highly recommended as breed-stock by benefit of the fact that they were rated Select or Select Excellent at a National. Dogs who can NOT pass the TC are recommended for breeding!?!? Dogs who have bad hips/elbows are recommended for breeding!?!? Granted, the judge doesn't know this when awarding the Select title, but, breeders know and the PC knows and still invites these dogs to appear in the Parade of Greats next to hard-working performance dogs, Hero dogs, Service dogs, etc. SOUND DOGS!! You get my drift?? SOUND (mentally and physically) DOGS are GREAT DOGS! IMHO. I am not denigrating the Select awards. I think getting one is a wonderful achievement, I just don't think they deserve to be considered a GREAT stand-alone achievement, compared to other, harder to achieve accomplishments. One judge, one year, one good day = Select. Sometimes, the judge is a friend. Know how many judges say, "4th is for friends?" Well, in the past 30-some years, I have seen many Selects that "were for friends." Good dogs for the most part (not great), but, one win just doesn't seem to merit the prestige GSD breeders seem to consider it to be. In my experience this past year, looking over Harley's accomplishments, I don't think the BIS was nearly as big a deal (actually it is a bit laughable) as the invitation to Westminster, but, then, that was a lifetime dream, so I may be a bit prejudiced. I think his overall accomplishments, all the things in my sig line added together, makes him a great GSD, statistically, and per the breed standard, especially function and form. As my house pet and companion, I KNOW he is a great dog, but, that is MY great heart dog, not a Parade of Greats dog!! I mean NO disrespect nor offense to anyone. Just expressing my opinions. Last year was quite an education and I have re-evaluated my opinions about many things in the dog show world. Things are not always as they appear. National wins are awesome, no doubt about it, but, you would be surprised what other things are even more awesome!! To answer a question Even posed the other day, would I have a dog accomplish much and die young? NEVER. I would give up everything we have done if the price of it was a short-lived dog. Harley's grandmother, Ch. Diana, died too young. I would give up her show career, and the birth of her grandson, Harley, for comfortable health and longevity. She died 6 years ago and I miss her every day. She was the soundest GSD I ever knew. One good thing, she passed her soundness on to her grandson, but, not her health. Thank heavens for that!! One thing I look forward to is presenting Harley, competitively, in the Veteran's Class at a National in the future. That would be another great accomplishment IMHO. One other thing about National award winners.....I have learned about this breed, I have grown to love this breed more and more having known and seen many of you. Not by virtue of that one win, but, most National award winners are great dogs, IMHO. It is NOT all about breeding stock. It is about GERMAN SHEPHERD DOGS excelling at one aspect or another of what our wonderful breed does and/or competes at. Even the lowly all-breed competitor is mentioned.
