Has everyone watched the news of the man with his 18 year old shepherd
mix? He takes the dog in the water each evening to exercise him, then lets
him float and fall asleep on the owner's chest. That is something that tugs
at your heart and says all you need to know about owning a dog.
Awards do mean something. It means you chose a good one to show. It means
you hired the right handler for your dog. It means you picked the right
judge to show under. It means you did the work, traveled to the shows, stuck
around long enough to win the award, whatever one it is.
It says something about you as well as your dog. It takes dedication,
intelligence, perseverance and guts to be in this breed. It takes hard work to
win, and thicker skin to take the blasts when you so. It takes a lot of
strength to continue in the face of so many challenges. It takes a strong
heart to deal with the death of your best friends, over and over. It takes a
strong personality to come back after you lose, and try again.
Awards says as much about us as it does our dogs.
And, it is the only way we keep score.
