My experience with adult onset mega esophagus was with a 9-1/2 year old male.
It was one of the symptoms of what was finally diagnosed by the <?xml:namespace
prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />University of
California/Davis as polymyositis. Yukon got repeated bouts of aspiration
pneumonia - each bout it took more out of him physically. I remember giving
him Sucufate (Carafate?) for the acid reflux, feeding him a gruel I made in the
blender, feeding him standing up, etc. Unfortunately with the mega-E,
aspiration pneumonia and the muscle wasting disease it was too much for him and
I had to put him down when he was about 10-1/2. BUT on the positive side, I've
heard of dogs living for years with mega-E - I hope your friend's dog falls
into this category.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns =

We have a rescue dog who has been with us for app. 3 mos. During this time he
has been neutered, updated on all medical and passed 2 vet checks with no
problems. We found that with a certain treat he would spit up so we D/C'd those
treats with no other noticeable problems. This dog is app. 3-4 years of age. He
was placed a week ago and the new owner noticed he would on occasion spit up
and would consequently cough with repeated spitting up. While staying with us,
we have never noticed any coughing. Yesterday they had treated him at an
emergency clinic and he was diagnosed with megaesophagus and aspiration
pneumonia.
Have any of you had any experience with adult mega? I have seen it in young
pups in past years, but none would have survived to adulthood due to other
related defects. Can it spontaneously occur or are the chances are that it
always
was present more realistic? We are taking him back and he will be vetted to
confirm his diagnosis. We are wondering what his prognosis might be. Since our
vet is not due in until tomorrow, we thought to ask for your opinions.
Pat
