excellent point(s), paulette. producing and selling puppies does NOT a
breeder make. breeders SHOULD be conscientious about the homes in which they
place their pups; we are selling a living "commodity," not a stamp to be
mounted in an album or a car that will only be driven to an exhibit. the
"buyer beware" should be a two-sided coin, the other side being "breeder
beware." sad to say but there have been instances where i would have taken a
risk on a newbie rather than sell to a so-called and self-proclaimed
"proven" home in which my dog would have had neither the love nor proper care
he
deserved.

Also, the practice of selling pups to whomever comes along, does not make
them better breeders. Yeah, they may sell more pups this way, but is this
what trying to improve the Breed is all about? Selling more puppies?
Personally, I like a breeder who asks a lot of questions. It shows that they
really care what happens to the pup after the sale.

Excellent Kathy!....it's our marketing and our method...year before last
,I bought two "German half sisters out of perhaps the top working dog WDA in
the country Teejay von Wilhendorf...the woman from Atlanta didn't know me,
didn't run a background check on me, didn't get me to fill out a twenty
page puppy application, no co-ownership,,,,no nothing...she told me the
price gave me the written contract and shipped the dogs to CA.....now had that
been the Owner of a Top Show dog and I was an unknown...do you think I'd
have got a dog from that breeder?...and even if I did, I'd have to jump
threw 50 hoops ...the enemy is US....Ed Hill

This is not German vs American guys. Â It is simple MARKETING and
PROMOTION.
 The Europeans, in particular the SV
have done a masterful job of marketing and promoting their dogs for
decades.
We have discussed this many times , I should have it on a recording...lol
They market to the WORLD. Â They promote to young children, their parents
and
grandparents.
They REWARD participation in the sport. Â They make participation EASY AND
AVAILABLE for the youngest famciers..think
footed pjs , guys.
They have utterly beautiful breed type, breed type that the public WANTS.
Now before you jump down my throat, I know there are many beautiful
American
GSDs out there, I happen to be
proud owner of a couple, lol. Â But really, ever notice how DARK our breed
is? Â Ever notice how sidegait seems to take precedence
over other aspects of the breed like CORRECT temperament, trainability,
desire to please?
I had this discussion with my awesome Brother in Law, Bill Tank.
We talked about how, as US breeders we give a little here, give a little
there, for that almighty SIDE GAIT.
I include us in this, as well.
You see that STAR mover. Â But he/she maybe is weird about noise, or
stresses
in new situations, or is less than a hero around
strangers...or maybe, just doesn't WANT to work or be biddable...but we
(collective) train it, work with it, make excuses, and
are thrilled when less than wonderful character/ working drive , becomes
Champion Less than Wonderful.
Hey, I know from whence I speak, we trained multitudes of dogs for people
that were
"Less than Wonderful" that went on to that coveted CH...because of the
friggin sidegait.
The European show line breeders get more because people want dogs that
think, dogs that are beautiful on the Christmas card,
dogs that LOOK like GSDS ...not like some spindly dark, or dark with
white/creme knock off of a GSD.
We have failed to listen to the public, by and large. Â We have in the
last
15 years or more become more and more, an entity that
breeds for other specialists...a rapidly dwindling group.
We must market to what the public likes. Â It doesn't matter how much we
all
think Mr or Miss "Black as Midnite" or
"Spindly as a Spider" or "Dumb as a Post" should be a champion or has a
perfect sidegait..., JQP doesn't give a .... about sidegait guys...
if our public doesn't like them,
they WILL and DO go elsewhere....
enter the German dogs...and they will pay for them...yes they will.
