I just spent part of the day (in between business conference calls)
responding to a woman's ad where she labeled her bitch a "Champion". (She
wasn't). When I asked what kind (AKC, UKC, Intl.???) I got back a dictionary
cut
and paste for the work "Champion". This gal was in TX and had quite a few
imports and second generation dogs/puppies for sale in the $1,000- $1,200
range and quite honestly, a few of the males she'd bred to look nice. So
don't believe for a minute ALL imports go for big bucks...she is having a
hard time, looks like, selling puppies.
Of course, honesty might go a long way...
I rarely hear the comparison/get into the whole G v. A thing when someone
calls for a puppy. If someone asks do I have German or American lines, I
answer truthfully "both". If I ask why they ask, I hear the comment that so
and so doesn't like the "roach" or so and so was afraid of "tough", "too
high drive" just as often as I hear criticism of the Am. lines. And you
know, there is a kernel of truth in ALL stereotypes and I don't have a lot of
time for extremes on either side.
I think rather than worry about what side of the pond a dog's immediate
ancestors come from, buyers fall into two groups; those who are looking to
spend very little and those who can afford a well bred carefully raised puppy.
The second group IS out there. I usually suggest rescue to the first
group <G>.

While JQP is generally ignorant of structure, I really do think we need to
stop and look at our dogs more critically when asked such a question, and
not brush it off because we're insulted.
I don't think it's an unfair question to ask when a dog is standing around
and it's rear is shaking like a rattle because they can't hold themselves
up
properly (please note, I am NOT saying they're all like this, and I'd like
to think we all know that as a whole things have definitely improved).
