Subject: The public image of the German Shepherd

As PR chair, I subscribe to several newsfeeds that alert me when articles
about German Shepherds appear in the news. Sadly, about 75 percent of the
news articles forwarded to me are dog bite stories.

The other 25 percent are retiring police dogs, adoptable pets, or human
interest stories - the good stuff.

But that 75 percent of the news fed to the public regarding our dogs is
related to aggression concerns me. It's not even about 75 percent of the
dogs being aggressive, but the media portrays our dogs this way, and we need
to combat this.

I don't think that 95% of the members in the WDA or the GSDCA are the
problem. Just as with the puppy mill situation and the reputation of having
bad hips, I believe that most of us in the WDA and the GSDCA are doing
whatever we can to produce a healthy, well bred, psychologically stable dog
suitable for our purposes, a dog who is not dangerous, but who, in the case
of the Schutzhund dog, shows controllable protectiveness/aggression, is
trainable, etc. We handle our dogs responsibly.

Nevertheless, it is our duty, our burden, if you will, to do what we can to
influence public opinion, to uphold the ideals of the dog.

I've thought long and hard about this, and want to know what you think.

What is the most effective way to reach those people who may be potential
puppy buyers or future exhibitors in any sport?

I have some ideas, but want to know what you think. How do we do this?

Your thoughts?

Cyndy
