and maybe as you say THOUSANDS of "white breeders". I don't think many
of those will begin to support AKC Events ....but who knows. I don't see
numbers as being a reason to drive a decision to change our Standard??
While your numbers and figures are impressive...you also need to factor in
the current members you might lose. You know....members that DO support
the Specialty Shows, Futurities and our National... and our Breed
Standard.
If you think it is "foolish and backwards" to keep our Breed Standard
intact rather than grab for 'huge numbers' of white breeders...I see why
we don't agree.

While we all think our board occasionally mad, they surely would be
completely so to entertain an idea that clearly wouldn't fly with regards
to
AKC rules. Last I checked, to be eligible for entry into the FSS program
(as AWSA is now requesting the board- but haven't forgotten that AWSA
previously asked the GSDCA & AKC to allow FCI registered BBS to be AKC
registered as GSDs and that was done), a new breed cannot be created on the
basis of a disqualifying fault in an existing breed.
The whole reason it was easy in FCI countries to have the Swiss White
Shepherd created as a new breed is because they literally weren't a breed
anywhere but here in North America. White just doesn't exist in the SV
standard. They are not eligible for registration as GSDs. Switzerland got
the honour of Mother Country, having been the first FCI country to
recognise
the breed separately (and FCI wouldn't let American-Canadian White Shepherd
thing fly seeing as neither true country of origin are FCI members-- before
FCI recognition, ACWS were registered with multi-country registries that
accepted them- similar to the UKC in that way).
Way back when, they were even called White German Shepherds- seeing as they
were exported to various points with AKC/CKC GSD papers why not? ;)
Just looking objectively at the situation, it would be another
coffin-sealing nail for the club to exclude the white coats from the breed.
Why?
Someone wisely said that the people with whites are a well-organised group
who are actively showing already. In a time of rapidly declining entries
at
shows, to be able to include the whites in all AKC activities, including
specialty events (other than performance & TC) would surely generate much
needed club revenues. As many, if not still most, AWSA club members are
NOT GSDCA members (the ones who are are just waiting for "the vote"- why
pay
big dues to a breed club whose breed you don't even have), the GSDCA would
actually stand to gain much of that membership- and of course those of the
white GSD clubs-- as they all being a group of well-organised people
already
actively showing & campaigning their whites, will be happy to utilise the
end goal of being included in the AKC conformation ring regardless of any
previous politics. That's what it was all about before the 'split'- where
one group thought to be a new breed (as was taking hold in Europe for a
few
years) and th
e other group was to keep on the same track, but both thought their idea
was the better way to go to achieve that end. To be able to show locally
without having to stay overnight (at least!) would mean I would be able to
show my dogs more frequently. Those of you who know me know I show in as
much performance as conformation. :) I'd bet my bottom dollar that once
the
DQ is removed and the dust settles, there WILL be UKC registered White
Shepherds (who also have AKC German Shepherd Dog registration- confusing
right) being shown in the AKC conformation ring. I'd bet there will be
large groups of whites from both camps showing up at AKC shows. Precedent
is already set for BBS imports, so there would be no problem there for the
importation of whites with those who want to do that...
Having mentioned dwindling entries- and we all know the sad state of these
economic times so I'm not going into detail- think of this: so the PC has
3000ish members currently, right? Do y'all know that on average, there are
AT LEAST 3000+ white GSDs who are AKC litter registered each year? Enough
for every member to have at least one every year.... To FINANCIALLY
exclude
(conservatively estimating) a living population of 30,000 AKC registered
dogs of our breed is just plain foolish and backwards. Even to get a
measly
2% of those owners in new members from all those dogs would significantly
increase ( a percentage in the upper teens) the PC membership... To the
tune
of $35K in membership dues alone on just 2% for starters- not to mention
many experienced people becoming involved and being active in not just the
PC, but local clubs as well.
Yes for many this is a very emotional issue. I don't understand why and
could only guess its just change and whites/coats are on the platter... If
one looks at the genetic knowledge we have gleaned about our breed and
others, and have found that the epistatic white gene in the GSD to NOT be a
deleterious gene (would the breed ever have gotten off the ground if it
were?!?) nor having any effect on health or temperament, or anything else
to
do with the rest of the dog but its hair colour. It is literally being
homozygous at one particular location on the entire GSD genome to be white.
Kinda like how a black dog we know to be homozygous for the most recessive
alleles on the agouti gene, or for coats to be homozygous for the recessive
that causes longer hair. Hmmmmm.....
I should think the sooner the membership gets to vote on the DQ removal the
better- then we can get on to more eventful things than our hair...
