You are right about the "Dual Champion" designation - it does not mean breed
champion and any novice level companion/performance title. It means 2
championships - breed and one other.

This is a fascinating thread. I'm learning a lot about titles I never knew
before!!!
I "think" it was on this list, I may be wrong, but within the past month or two
there was a short discussion of what a Dual Champion is? Someone claimed that
a conformation Champion of record who earned an obedience Companion Dog/CD
title (I think it was a CD) could be called a Dual Champion which people
pointed out is wrong. But I can't recall if anyone gave the true definition of
what a Dual Champion really is - if so I missed it. Any way, here's the AKC
definition of a Dual Champion DC title:
"DC Dual Champion:
Any dog that has been awarded the title of Champion of Record (Ch.) may be
designated as a "Dual Champion," after it has also been awarded the title of
Field Champion (FC) or Herding Champion (HC)
[ Conformation / Field Trial / Herding Trial ] "

While the above might be true for GSDs, it isn't true for
all breeds. Indeed, each individual performance sport has
it own particular rules about which dogs are eligible. For
some, spayed and neutered dogs are ineligible to compete,
such as the case with Beagle or Basset field trials. And
breed standard DQs render any such dogs ineligible to
compete in other events such as Lure Coursing.
