I'm catching up on old mail and came across this email.  
 
AKC awards SIGNIFICANT scholarships every year.  During vet school  (from 
which she graduates this weekend!), my sister received a $15,000  scholarship 
one 
year and another year received a scholarship  for $5000.  Showing dogs really 
does pay :-)

aspirations of becoming veterinarians,  journalists, teachers and=20

Each student=92s academic history and potential, as well as  involvement=20=

in the sport of purebred dogs, were key criteria for  winning the award=20=

from a field of 138 candidates.=A0 The average  grade point average among=20=

the recipients was 3.75.=A0 In addition,  each applicant had to submit an=20=

essay describing their experience  in the fancy and the significance of=20=

the sport in their  lives.

The 58 recipients represent a cross section of the fancy  today, with=20
participation in every AKC event offered to date, and  ranging from=20
third and fourth generation exhibitors to those who found  their way to=20=

their first dog events by chance. Recipients listed  achievements such=20
as representing the United States on the World Agility  Team, in the=20
International Junior Competition at Crufts and the World  Show,=20
finishing homebred champions, earning multiple titles, judging  Junior=20
Showmanship, owning therapy dogs and volunteering in their  communities.
