I had drawn my line in the sand so to speak about adding mixes to
performance events. I felt it was contrary to the mission statement of the
AKC, BUT,the below is the most sensible argument I have read. If the AKC
wants to start and Org within itself for this type of venue..go for it.As
long as purebred dogs aren't getting bumped for entries by mixes and as
long as the events are held separately..I could live with that. As for no
new members in the sport..for those who get the Gazette..read the interview
with the Old English Sheep dog breeders..they hit the nail on the head.
their breed is "high" maintenance which is not conducive to attracting many
new people to their breed. The GSD is also high maintenance in a different
way..lots of conditioning and training to be competitive..so it is not just
our breed..Now days if something requires a bit of work or effort..forget
it. Interestingly, having competed in obedience, I found it to be quite a
bit of work also if you really wanted to be competitive..so it has to be
the nature of conformation and the subjectivity of it that turns people
toward performance events.then add additional work for high maintenance
breeds and many really lose interest! Christine
