Hi Evan: I'm glad to hear you address this issue as you are a lawyer.
There are dishonest people out there who will forge signatures on AKC
papers. You're so very right about saying the AKC will handle all of
these kinds of complaints. All is not lost, if you get in contact with
the AKC about this. This very thing happened to me some years ago. I
suspected it, but you don't want to believe this of
people.......especially ones that you trust. But when trust has been
broken, then you can sit back and scratch your head and say "Gee I've
been taken", or you can do something about it. I did something about
it. I called the AKC. They told me they save records of litter
registrations for years. They looked up this particular dog's
registration and, indeed she was signed over to the other person who
forged my name. I was no longer her co-owner and I bred her. I asked
what could be done about this. They told me that I could write to them
everything I just told them and once they have it in writing, then the
person who did the forging can have their AKC showing and breeding
rights taken away.........even after all these years! I'm glad they
keep such good records. Best wishes, Barbara Galasso
