Please share this information with club members and other dog lovers  
in the Toledo area:

AKC has just learned that thanks to all your hard work and education  
over the past months, the Toledo City Council will meet on Tuesday,  
October 12th to consider amending the portion of their Municipal Code  
that bans “pit bulls” in the city.  The new ordinance would address  
the deeds of dogs and their owners, instead of punishing specific  
breeds.  Responsible dog owners and breeders are encouraged to attend  
and to call or send emails to the council members thanking them for  
considering this measure and asking them to support it.

Toledo ordinance 389-10 will repeal Municipal Code §505.14, which  
prohibited the ownership of “pit bulls or pit bull mixed breed dogs”.   
Due to repeated questions about the adequacy and efficacy of this ban  
by Toledo citizens and concerned dog owners, the Lucas County Dog  
Warden Citizens Advisory Committee had recommended the removal of  
§505.14.

The AKC believes that dog owners should be responsible for their dogs.  
We support laws that: establish a fair process by which specific dogs  
are identified as “dangerous” based on stated, measurable actions;  
impose appropriate penalties on irresponsible owners; and establish a  
well-defined method for dealing
with dogs proven to be dangerous.  The AKC strongly opposes any  
legislation that determines a dog to be “dangerous” based on specific  
breeds or
phenotypic classes of dogs.
