Ginger Cleary - Rome, GA www.rihadin.com "Laws against something 'that other guy' does will eventually get US because we are all someone's 'other guy.' " Walt Hutchens,2007 -----Original Message----- Fanciers; NEW INFORMATION on California AB 1634. The deadline for getting letters faxed to the Assembly Appropriations Committee members is next WEDNESDAY, MAY 9TH. The hearing is scheduled in the Assembly Appropriations Committee on Wednesday, May 16th in Sacramento at the State Capitol, Room # 4202 at 9AM. Get there very early (7AM). There will be buttons to wear - "No on AB 1634". WHAT TO DO NOW: GO TO THE CFA WEBSITE for the Committee Member list, contact information and points to make. http://cfa.org/exhibitors/alert-CA-AB1634-2.html#Nicol SEE IF YOUR Assembly Member is on the Appropriations Committee. To find your Assembly Members put your zipcode in on the State website - http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/yourleg.html YOU as a constituent will have the most influence on the outcome of this Committee's Vote. The Members care when there is pressure from their own districts. Call friends, family and pet owners to have them contact their own Assembly Member. FAX a short one or two paragraph letter to your Committee Member in Sacramento asking him/her to oppose AB 1634 as amended April 30, 2007. Tell him/her you live in their district and you have great concerns with this legislation. Tell them you will be impacted. Sharon Runner and Bill Emmerson have both expressed opposition to this bill - thank them and ask for their continued support. VISIT the district office and speak to an aide or call. The State website takes you to each Committee Member's home page with their district address, phone and fax. http://www.assembly.ca.gov/acs/newcomframeset.asp?committee=43 EVERYONE - FAX to the Committee Consultant, Chuck Nicol. FAX copies of your short letter to all 16 members of the Committee. (Email contact is not effective in California.) Choose points to make on the CFA website. http://cfa.org/exhibitors/alert-CA-AB1634-2.html#Nicol See other information on the CFA website to understand why NO breeders of pedigreed cats/purebred dogs can meet the conditions for exemption. Make sure the Committee Members know this. Supporters are misleading legislators. They continue to state that fanciers are exempt and the bill will only mean paying some unknown fees for an intact permit and breeder's license. No - it means breeding of fine home-raised cats and dogs will END in this State. It means the loss of all that cat and dog fanciers bring to the State - our shows, education, breed rescue, donations to shelters, business to hotels, veterinarians, pet supply stores. Many are concerned with the loss of service, herding, hunting or law enforcement dogs in the future. AB 1634 means pedigreed kittens/purebred puppies would have to be obtained from out of state. ASK YOUR VETERINARIAN to oppose AB 1634. Have your veterinary clinic FAX a letter on their letterhead to the Committee Consultant requesting to be listed as "opposed to AB 1634 amended April 30, 2007". Have your veterinarian send a copy to the California Veterinary Medical Association expressing displeasure in their sponsorship of this bill. There is a sample letter for you to give to your veterinarian to explain why AB 1634 is a bad law as well as a sample letter format for your veterinarian to send to the Committee on this website - http://noab1634.com/ CFA has collaborated with dog fanciers to help provide information on this website. There are more good points to make in letters on this website. ALSO - sign our petition - " Dog and Cat Owners Say No to AB 1634" on the CFA website. Get your friends and family in California to help. We have over 11,000 signatures now. The petition purpose is to educate pet owners and the general public. This bill targets those who raise fine animals. It will be costly to all 536 jurisdictions in the State, which would have to write new ordinances whether they want to or not. High penalties for non compliance and complaint-driven harassment enforcement means homeless unowned cats will be ignored and citizens of low income will be especially effected by AB 1634. We are counting on YOU - everyone who cares about homeless animals in shelters but realizes that AB 1634 is not the right answer must ACT NOW.
