The first German Shepherd I bought when I wanted to start showing was
Jennarick's Felicia, sired by Reno, out of Ch Lakeside's Just Jamaica, from
Dick Jennings. Felicia only had three puppies, two monorchids and my
foundation bitch, Ch Awlful Good of Edan, CD, TC, ROM. Dick and I still talk
dogs several times a year and remember the good old days.

Years ago, when we all were young and full of hope, I met the breeder of
some great dogs, Dick Jennings. Dick came from the mid-West and was a good
friend of Connie Beckhart.
Dick had a couple of great dogs, one was Just Jamacia, who is the bitch in
the picture jumping into the reflective pool in Washington, DC. I have
that picture on my wall at work. Another was Danang, who I always liked. His
kennel was Jennarick and I know many of us remember the dogs. Now Dick
has one of my dogs as a house pet.
Dick was an attorney in Iowa and also passed the California bar. He didn't
want to practice law, but Dick came to work with me 19 years ago as my law
clerk, and is still here. Dick is the ring steward for the Orange Coast
and Long Beach shows.
He and his wife Becky had two daughters, and about 12 years ago Becky
died of cancer, and Dick raised the kids on his own. One of his daughters,
Samatha went to college on a full scholorship for softball.
Samatha graduated and entered veternarian school in the East where she
excelled, and has now graduated. Samatha decided to come back to Southern
California, passed the California exams and is now working full time as a
licensed verternarian.
For those who want a veternarian who knows German shepherds, is a great
young person, and is someone we can trust, she is at Community Veternarians on
Euclid Avenue in Garden Grove. Dick tells me that they have five vets
there, maybe now six, and service all the police dogs in the area.
Dick tells the story of Samatha being in a dog food store and someone had a
German shepherd puppy. She asked the name of the puppy, and when told,
said: "Oh, then that must be a Chateau son." The people were astounded. She
has the same sort of memory that her father has, and Dick amazes me every
day with his knowledge of German shepherds.
I am not sure why, but I take great deal of pride in Samatha. She is a
great person, has been to the house many times to see puppies, and has always
held German shepherds first in her heart. Be sure to ask for her if you go
in. I understand they don't take appointments, just take care of you when
you get there.
