When I came into this breed just about 30 years ago, there were 3 kinds of GSD's being shown at AKC event. The "All Breed Shepherds", the "Specialty" shepherd and the "obedience dog" and you didn't mix them unless you wanted to waste your money. And the unwritten rating of the three was that the Specialty dog was the best you could have to show, the all breed types were mediocre and would never win in the specialty ring because they weren't "extreme movers" and then last but not least were the "obedience dogs". Many of these came from breeders who felt the puppy was not worthy for any conformation ring, but definitely could be shown in obedience since the dogs there are not judged on structure. Moving forward when soft ears, splayed feet, down on pasterns, soft backs, shy dogs, cow-hocks, mish mashers .... were out there being shown, but were extreme movers, it was said to show under "breeder judges" because of the forgiveness they had over the all breed judges that wanted to see good temperament, erect ears, clean coming and going and good feet. So the separation continued. If this is sounding bad it's because there was enough of this out there that even the pet people or novice GSD shopper noticed the difference between AB and Specialty type and would question ...WHY??? (And believe me I know there are those that can be shown in all rings and win but that's not the majority.) Time goes forward, the obedience person wants a GSD with great temperament and stamina to endure 2 and 3 day weekend shows, the 36" high jump (which has now been lowered) and the stress of showing. They want more drive and a medium sized dog so they purchase dogs from across the pond. New people coming in don't want to show in conformation for whatever the reason, the expense, the lack of owner handler opportunities or the fact that a Championship title to them is not that important, so they buy the type that they see in other areas they think they may want to try with their GSD. Has there been an alienation of this breed, among the breed? Most definitely. I would say that a supported entry of 5/1 1/0 is definitely a wake-up call, but there will be those of you out there that will continue to come up with various excuses as to why that happened. The stigma that seems to exist in Shepherds is that a win at a specialty is worth more than a win at an all-breed show. If you think this is unique, think again...people in almost all breeds are very quick to advertise a win under a breeder judge or breed specialist...we are not as unique as we like to think. This doesn't keep those other breeds from the all breed shows, however..and now we're suffering for that, entrywise. When you look at the GSD results from some all breed shows, you might think "oh yuck, that dog couldn't win at a specialty." Big deal...it might not have won at the all breed, either, if you'd had your dogs there! Time to wake up, folks. Look at how the numbers have gone down at the National. People just aren't showing the way they did...it's easy to say it's because this is a handler-dominated breed, and owners are aging out..well, age is happening to people in other breeds, too...and the handler-dominated thing is something we let happen...that's our fault. As I said...take a look at how many dogs are needed for majors, esp. 5-point majors, in some other breeds, and compare the numbers to what's required in Shepherds. We need young blood, we need a way to make it possible for owners to show their own dogs whenever possible, and we need to support more than just specialties. On top of all that, there are still people out there who think GSDs are all cripples....because they never get to see more than one or two top dogs.........the other good dogs, the ones that win at specialties, esp. the National, don't go to all-breed shows.............we are NOT educating the public, and that has to be done, or there won't be any people left who care about the breed!
