Sheila,
The idea of dogs and cats living a free and natural life in the wild is
just marketing. Remember, these organizations are out to get donations and
buy-in from the public. If they are too blunt about their goals for total
extinction,
they won't get the donations from animal lovers who are foolish enough to
fall
for their propaganda.
Extinction is their dream and goal - the history of the animals, and even
the
happiness and well-being of the animals don't matter, except as a tool to
get
money.
Sadly, not many people seem able to follow the logic of 'no breeders + no
intact animals = NO animals at all!'

This is rediculous. They don't even understand the history of dogs or
domestic cats, how can they possibly know what is best for them.
Neither can be truely happy without humans. And neither would exist if
humans had not interfered.
Now that we have dogs and cats, we are responsible for each and every one of
them. To set them free will only put them beyond risk of extinction. Where
would they live? Humans are destroying all non-human environments, there
will be no place for the lions tigers and bears soon, so where would such a
things as a feral dog go?
