Hi All; I attended the NJ Federation meeting last night where Dr. Holt talked on PAWS and answered questions ( if you could call it that) from the audience. I had also set through Dr. Holt's talk at the AKC Delegates meeting last week. The meeting started at 8pm and we were told we would only have till 9:30 for the meeting. Will, we were all wondering how long Mr. Holt was going to talk about his life history before getting to the point. When the questions started he skirted around every answer. No simple defined answer, typical politician answers, he did the same thing at the Delegates meeting. My question to him last night was what guarantee do we have that the numbers will not change once this is enacted? His answer was about 5 minutes long, that he "thinks" they will remain the same. He also did not answer a question that was asked twice in two forms, and that is how will the Government get information on how many litters a hobby breeder may be breeding? He said " it will be like income tax, they know who has income". When asked if AKC would supple their registry records, he said no, the government can not use an outside source. I personally do not know if that is true. There was also another remark made by Dr. Holt which those of us in the audience ( Joan Murko who's report Peggy sent you last week about the Irish Setter Club) caught and that was "when this is enacted". To us it sounded like he thinks this is a done deal. At the Delegates meeting, more then once it was innervated that we the people opposed to PAWS, have no clue about how Bills come about. The second thing that was said was that we were making the AKC look bad by contacting our Congressmen and Senators now about the Bill, and that by doing this we were making them lost their creditability with Government. I for one, do not take favorable to have an organization insinuate that I have no right to voice an opinion, because it is not their opinion, or that myself and the people opposed are not educated. Because they want everyone to jump if the AKC says jump. AKC seems to have lost sight that we, the clubs, hobby breeders, and exhibitors are the AKC. They have managed to make this a house divided with the number of Parent Clubs opposed accounting for over 57% of the purebred dogs in the registry. I personal feel that those of us who are opposed must continue are fight and not give up. Dr. Holt told my husband that he did not expect this to be voted on until probably next fall. So, keep on bugging your elected officials, and it someone who represents you is in favor of this Bill and up for reelection, work like hell to elect their opposition. We do have power, and that power that we have is in our vote on election day. You think with the devastation of Katrina our elected officials would have better ways to spend our tax dollars. Sorry this was so long, but I wanted to keep my GSD folks informed. Cathy Kelstar Catherine Murch fmurch@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Why Wait?
