I like "b" a lot...not sure if you could enforce it, but I see that it would
get more young dogs out. As far as "a"...I can't speak for other clubs, but my
club works very closely with other clubs in the region to make sure that there
are no overlaps and that we don't conflict with a futurity weekend. We are
also very aware of when judges have judged in the region and are careful not to
book a judge too close to a past assignment. We also try to book judges
together that are complimentary.
This year was a challenge for us in the Southeast. Our club had to move our
normal show date due to a futurity weekend. That was OK, but it caused us to
go back to back with the Louisanna and MS show weeekend. That is not ideal,
but we had no choice. In hindsight maybe we could have marketed it
better....such as "come south for 2 great weekends only a short drive
apart"...I don't know. Specialties have certainly become a challenge. Cynthia

So a number of ideas for people to think about if they want to increase the
number of entries at shows:
a. Have all clubs coordinate dates for shows under the auspices of a broader
regional club,so that specialty shows are coordinated within an areas,
coordinated with futurities, coordinated with allbreeds and holidays don't have
the same judges within an area such that you minimize the possibilities of
conflicts etc.Now ofcourse this will require for people to work togehtor and
compromise, yes COMPROMISE for the greater good!!!! For example we could have
such a group between all the West Coast clubs.
b. Allow only owners or junior handlers to handle dogs in the 6-9 and 9-12
classes. This i believe will spur more puppies to be shown because they are
shown for Free, give more young people to participate, and allow the new owner
who has just purchased a puppy to get a taste of the "dog show" game without
having to spend more than an entry fee. For example this weekend, there were
really more 10 to 12 week puppies in puppy pens around the ring than dogs being
shown in competition. So wouldn't it be great if 3 months from now the majority
of these young puppies with their new proud owners come and show these dogs at
the shows with very little cost. Some will eventually leave, but there is a
great chance we will have more people be "hooked".
